Keto diet, what’s all the buzz about? A quick look.

The ketogenic diet is an interesting one. It consists of a high fat, low carbohydrate and moderate protein sources in order to achieve the outcome of the body using fat as it’s main source (as opposed to sugar).

How the body usually operates is through the burning of glucose, stored in your liver and eventually released for energy. The aim of the keto diet is to starve the body of glucose, so that the stores become depleted. As the body cannot use the carbohydrates from food for energy, the body then uses the natural fat stores for energy.

While this is a very basic explanation, Ketosis can be very beneficial for weight loss but a word of warning- it does come with an initial period of getting used to. Some initial side effects of the bodies process of getting into ketosis includes brain fog, general fatigue, bad breath, loss of appetite, digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea, and insomnia.

This doesn’t sound great…and naturally it’s not going to be the diet for everyone. However it must be reiterated that this period is initial and the body starts to produce notable benefits. Some benefits of the ketosis diet when your body is accustomed includes:

  • Healthy weight loss.
  • Increased levels of healthy Cholesterol (HDL).
  • Reduced blood sugar and insulin levels.
  • Reduced epilepsy attacks in epilepsy patients.


Please ensure that you consult with your local doctor before trying this diet. As previously mentioned, this diet is not for everyone!
